In 2014, Mambo, Australia’s most irreverent brand, marked its 30th anniversary. To commemorate this cultural milestone, the National Gallery of Victoria showcased Mambo’s vibrant history during the summer of 2014/2015. The exhibition attracted over 40,000 visitors, transforming the gallery into thematic rooms representing the brand’s past, present, and future. Displayed were some of Mambo’s most iconic creative moments, including advertising, catalogues, Loud Shirts, original art, posters, promotional items, swing tickets, and T-shirts.

The exhibition also featured interviews with key figures in Mambo’s history – artists, designers, and owners – presented in a specially commissioned video that provided a humorous insight into the brand’s evolution. Following its success in Melbourne, the show travelled to Sydney at Central Park and concluded its year-long journey at Newcastle Art Gallery.

Mambo has evolved into one of Australia’s most distinctive brands, and this exhibition serves as a significant milestone, reflecting on its contributions as both a fashion label and a uniquely eccentric Australian institution. With its irreverent humour and unconventional sense of national pride, Mambo has played a pivotal role in shaping the graphic depiction of Australian life over the past three decades. According to Golding, the curator, “The exhibition explores the artists who have contributed to making Mambo a household name and presents the ideas and idiosyncrasies that define this unconventional brand.”

The inception of the exhibition concept took place in a Sydney CBD boardroom when Eddie Zammit pitched the idea to Angus Kingsmill. Zammit recalls, “I took a chance to celebrate one of the most iconic T-shirt brands in Australian history, investing my own money to discuss the concept in 2013. I firmly believe in creating your own luck.” The rest, as they say, is history.
